Myrtleford is a working town with an Italian alpine feeling and culture. When you visit Myrtleford, you have to pinch yourself to not believe, at times, you are not in parts of Italy.
Porepunka and Wandilagong are old gold-mining towns that still have simple general stores, frequentable and memorable pubs. Porepunka has a play-ground and safe swimming area for children on the banks of the Ovens.
Bright has still remained one of the Australia’s unique alpine villages with picnic grounds and the River Walk Cafe fronting the Oven’s river as it winds its way down to join the King, Goulburn and, eventually, the Murray River.
My. Buffalo is 35 minutes by car for snow-play and a great view of the alpine valley. Mt. Beauty, Feathertop, Mt. Hotham and Falls Creek are only one hour by car for serious skiing and access to mountain hiking.
Close by, individual boutique vineyards and boutique brewery provide excellent wine-tasting and gourmet food experiences. Further afield, but within one hour, is the King Valley, Milawa and, for the more adventurous, Yackandanda, Rutherglen, Dederang and Albury and Widonga.
